FAQs

How frequently should I brush my teeth and floss?

Dentists recommend you brush your teeth at least twice day and floss at least once daily.

How often should I visit my dentist for cleaning and exam?

Dr. Rankin recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and an exam.  This will ensure the best results for maintaining your oral health.

At what age should a child have his/her first visit?

Children should start seeing a dentist when they have eight primary teeth. This will allow the dentist to have an opportunity to detect early disease, assess adequacy of brushing and flossing practices, and to make recommendations on overall oral health.

Why do I need regular x-rays?

The primary purpose of routine radiographs, or x-rays, is to diagnose cavities between teeth. Cavities cannot be observed by visual oral exams. Depending on an individual’s oral health and risk for cavities, the frequency of routine x-rays is adjusted in keeping with the principle of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable).

Do my silver fillings need to be replaced?

Dentists recommend to only replace silver fillings is if they are leaking, broken or have a cavity under them.  At that time, amalgam fillings can be replaced with a material that is best suited for your situation — this can be mercury-free white fillings, inlays or onlays, veneers or crowns.
